Interview with Ian Carver at Georgia Today

There is a nice interview with the traveler/adventurer Ian Carver: from Tbilisi to Kabul on Georgia Today

"GT: Ian, you do travel a lot. If you wanted to settle down somewhere, where would that be?

IC: I think it would be in Tbilisi. Now I consider Georgia to be more or less my home. I don’t really see myself living in the US any time soon. It is more interesting here and I think Georgians will choose a brighter future." read the full article here

He has some honest and straight views both on Georgia and Afghanistan and some brilliant fotos  to show on his site, like the mentioned Afghan Game horse with the huge neck

which seem to be close by type to the Karabair horses I saw in Uzbekistan, and these had been huge as well.

from "My Brief Foray into Tbilisi, Georgia"

"Backpacking is exhausting. Every minute of your waking hours is spent on high alert. In Homeland Security speak, that would be like, orange or red. Your brains are on constant over-drive, processing the new and constantly changing landscape and people. Because of your unfamiliarity with the environment, nothing is automated. Instead, every person and situation needs to be assessed and scrutinized." read further on the first part of a series by Dana on going to Georgia at http://www.investoralist.com/backpacking-through-turkey-georgia/

Hospitality in Georgia and WikiTravel plus 1st Barcamp

WikiTravel became an incredible good source for traveling the world, so for Georgia:

Here on Hospitality

"Georgians are hospitable to a fault (and beyond). If a Georgian invites you somewhere it will be almost impossible to pay for anything and even raising the subject of who will cover the bill can be embarrassing for your host. If invited to a private home for dinner, make sure you arrive amply stocked with wine or sweets because your hosts may well be bankrupting themselves on your behalf.

If traveling in small towns (and in the quieter parts of Tbilisi) it is customary to greet almost everyone who passes you with a friendly "Gamarjobat" (Hello). After years of isolation followed by war and economic turmoil foreigners are still regarded with undisguised curiosity and a casual greeting in the street could land you in the middle of the best dinner party of your life.

It is a very ingrained and idiosyncratic characteristic of Georgian hospitality that Georgians wish nothing more than to hear that foreigners are enjoying their experience in Georgia. Expect to be asked whether you enjoy Georgia and its cuisine. And it is expected that you respectfully reply in the affirmative. Otherwise your "hosts" will look terribly dejected as if expressing a feeling of collective failure to show visitors enough hospitality."

Impressions from Yerevan

abovyan-street, originally uploaded by grijsz.

It just feels like Paris, except Paris misses the wonderful view to the two Ararat's and Yerevan misses the relaxing presence of the Seine. Of course Yerevan has the bigger cars and Off-Roaders, there are as many Hummers as are VWs in Germany.

Yerevan is perfect for a week of shopping and culture. And of course the amazing cuisine, which combines Armenian, Persian, Syrian, Greek, Georgian and European cuisine with a perfect arrangement and quite decent prices. The beer is perfect, the wine, the coffee, Taxi prices are as 1 Euro for short distances in the city, 2 for longer ways.

The problem are the many beautiful girls and women strolling along the boulevards and cafes, as it is difficult to bear that beauty and charm, especially if you are married already.

The town is full of Jazz, even there is a Courbet in the Museum of Fine Arts, there is a good collection of fine Dutch and Russian paintings, and there is Parajanov and a couple of good earlier Saryans. This city has taste and pop and culture and a bright nightlife.

To reach Yerevan from Tbilisi by car you need to plan 6 hours, plus 1 hour at the border, as the Checkpoint is still very slow and seems like old fashioned Soviet style. The best route is Tbilisi-Sadakhlo-Vanadzor-Dilidshan-Sevan- Yerevan.

It is definitely a top destination and I go there in November again. Thank you Yerevan !

"According to Armenian tradition, the name of Yerevan is derived from an expression exclaimed by Noah in Armenian while looking in the direction of Yerevan, after the ark had landed on Mount Ararat and after the flood waters had receded: "Yerevants!" ("it appeared!").[3] The more plausible theory on the origin of the name is that the city was named after the Armenian king, Yervand the Third (the Last), the last leader of the Orontid Dynasty and founder of the city of Yervandashat."
